The Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board announced this week that the University of Queensland Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety Science (Honours) has achieved accreditation by meeting the OHS and educational standards set by the Accreditation Board for education of generalist OHS professionals.
While there are only a few OHS bachelor programs in Australia the University of Queensland’s BOHSSci(Hons) is unique program in that it provides OHS professional education using face to face delivery mode in a four year bachelor (AQF 8) program.
The program attracts both school leavers and mature age students to a program having a strong science basis providing an excellent technical foundation for development of professional practice. The input by external experts and the relationship with industry build on the strong theoretical base and should result in well-rounded graduates.
Professor Mike Capra of the University of Queensland said that while this a new program with the first enrolments in 2010 and the first cohort graduating in 2013 there is a high level of interest by industry in the future graduates with many students already having weeks of work experience through vacation work with future employers.
Professor Bruce King of the Accreditation Board noted that the high level of pastoral care and study support offered by the UQ staff was a feature in an education environment where many programs are offered in a fully distance mode.
While UQ is the first university to have an OHS bachelor program accredited a number of universities including RMIT University, Latrobe University. Monash University, Edith Cowen University and the University of Newcastle have accredited graduate diploma and masters programs with other universities currently being assessed.
